How The Research Water Got So Hot, And What You Can Do About It

By: Ken Berry SVP, Applied Innovation

I’ve been working in market research since 2002. Like many of us, I jumped into it because it allowed me do something I genuinely love while helping people solve real problems.

For me, that has always been programming.

For many of my friends and colleagues, it’s the research itself. Whether they came from a research background, psychology, sociology, statistics, or simply found their way into MR through a less direct path. We were drawn to this work because it was interesting, challenging, and meaningful.

But somewhere along the way, the joy started getting crowded out.

Margins shrank.
Risk increased.
Liability multiplied.
And the amount of labor required just to produce acceptable data quietly exploded.

So… what happened?

From Panels to Traffic

There was a time when sample providers actually provided people.

They had panels.
They knew who their panelists were.
They understood which respondents were appropriate for which studies.
They invested in keeping those panelists engaged, fairly compensated, and well-managed.

Most importantly, the responsibility for sample quality lived with them.

Over time, panel companies became sample companies. And sample companies became traffic brokers.

Instead of supplying known respondents, they began relaying traffic from wherever it could be found. The bar quietly dropped from great data to “good enough so you don’t complain.” Anything expensive to maintain, quality slowly disappeared.

It became a race to the bottom.

The Shift No One Talked About

Here’s the part that doesn’t get discussed enough:

As sample companies offloaded responsibility, the burden didn’t disappear.
It shifted. Straight onto the shoulders of Market Research Agencies.

Suddenly, MRAs were:

  • Writing increasingly complex screeners
  • Layering in custom QC logic
  • Manually reviewing open ends
  • Policing fraud after field
  • Explaining data issues to clients they didn’t create

All while absorbing the cost.

That’s the boiling frog.

No one turned up the heat all at once. It happened gradually. One new workaround. One extra QC step. One more spreadsheet. One more late night. Until suddenly, this became normal.

And yet, even with all that extra labor, the end product is sometimes still worse than what we delivered years ago.

That’s not fair. And it’s not sustainable.

You Can’t Solve Today’s Problems with Yesterday’s Processes

The world didn’t just get harder.
It got more complex.

New devices.
New fraud vectors.
AI-generated respondents.
Synthetic behavior.
Programmatic supply chains no one can fully see.

I’m no Einstein, but we can’t solve today’s problems with the processes we built a decade ago. (Yes, I did that on purpose.)

And let’s be honest: sample companies aren’t going back to the way they were. That ship has sailed.

So if the responsibility for quality now lives with MRAs, then MRAs need new tools, new visibility, and new leverage.

What You Can Do About It

This is where a different operating model matters.

At OpinionRoute, we don’t believe the answer is “more people” or “more rules.” That just keeps turning up the heat.

We believe in:

  • Control during field, not just after
  • Real-time visibility into respondent behavior and risk
  • Technology that reduces labor, not adds to it
  • AI used thoughtfully, to detect fraud, surface patterns, and support human judgment, not replace it

Most importantly, we believe research teams should get back to doing what they love: thinking, analyzing, advising, and driving impact.

The OR Way isn’t about nostalgia for how things used to be. It’s about accepting reality and building the right operational infrastructure for the world we’re actually in.

Because the water isn’t cooling down.

The question is whether you’re going to keep boiling…or finally turn off the heat.

You’re not alone. And you don’t have to solve this by yourself. Don’t adapt to the heat, change it. See how OpinionRoute can help. Let’s connect.
