At TMRE this year, Anna Stoesz of the University of Minnesota laid out four plausible futures for the insights industry, and it was fascinating. Her framework confirmed something we see every day working with MRAs: there isn’t one path forward, and most agencies will move between several realities.

The four futures and the signals to watch for:

  1. Fast, Cheap, Narrow: Self-service spend growing faster than custom projects, smaller and more repetitive scopes.
  2. Human-Intelligence Advantage: A growing need for human-versus-AI rules based on risk, and a willingness to pay more for deep, human-first understanding.
  3. Distributed & Democratized: Major contracts bypassing central insights, and insights headcount dropping as marketing analytics and product research teams grow.
  4. Intelligence Orchestration: Research repositories feeding enterprise AI, and leaders expecting integrated answers instead of separate research outputs.

What we see from the MRA seat:

Small and mid-sized agencies are being pulled in two directions at once:

  • Clients want faster, cheaper, always-on research.
  • Those same clients want someone accountable when the decision carries risk.

Anna’s four futures describe that tension: fast and automated, human-led, specialist-driven, or integrated across data sources. At OpinionRoute, we believe a single agency and a single client can sit in different futures from one study to the next. A routine tracker and a high-stakes launch study need different things.

Where OpinionRoute resolves the conflicts in this paradigm:

Human expertise on every project. We’re most confident in the renaissance of human judgment. Plenty of buyers have tried the fast, cheap, DIY route, and plenty have tried AI. No one was particularly impressed with the output. Many are returning to human-led or hybrid approaches. Our retained, expert-led managed services were built for this. Technology handles the heavy lifting, and our people make sure the data is clean and holds up.

Technology that makes speed possible. Where clients need standardized, repeatable, fast research, The Navigator, our research workflow platform, keeps projects moving without adding headcount. Our NAV Quality suite (CleanID, ResponseID, and QC Flow) protect data quality so speed doesn’t cost you accuracy. AI-enabled Programming rounds out the workflow.

Flexibility as clients change. Because we cover both ends, we can meet an agency where its client is today and adjust as that changes.

What carries across all four futures:

  • What can be automated will be. This is nothing new for our industry or for OpinionRoute, and we think it’s good news for agencies. It frees your team for the work clients value most.
  • Soft skills will matter more than integration skills. Interpretation, synthesis, and building trust with a client are what set an agency apart. Our job is to take the operational load off so your team can spend their time there.

What we’d tell any agency right now:

Know where you stand on human evidence. Decide with your clients where human judgment is worth paying for and where automation is enough. Buyer and supplier need to be aligned on this.

Invest in data integration. Connecting sources and weighing conflicting evidence are becoming core capabilities. Centralized workflows where data is connected are the future.

Aim for ongoing intelligence. Look for the engagement model that fits each client now and expect it to shift.

Wherever your clients land, we’re here to help you work better.
